What is a live-service game?

By PixPause Editorial · Updated September 26, 2026 · 2 sources

SHORT ANSWER

A live-service game keeps making money after you get it: new seasons, battle passes, cosmetic shops and sometimes loot boxes — paid, randomised prizes. It can mean years of free updates, but also a game designed around spending, or one that shuts down when it stops earning.

EXPLAIN IT LIKE I'M 5

A normal game is a book you buy once. A live-service game is a magazine subscription with a sweet shop inside — new issues keep coming, and the shop is always open.

The live-service loop
  1. Get the gameOften free to download
  2. New season dropsEvents, maps, characters
  3. Spend to keep upBattle passes, skins, loot boxes
  4. Come back next seasonFOMO keeps the loop going
  5. repeat until done

Great when updates are generous; a problem when progress is gated behind spending.

How it works

Instead of one sale, live-service games — also called "games as a service" — earn money continuously: season passes, cosmetics, currency packs and subscriptions. Many are free to play, relying on a small share of players who spend a lot.

Loot boxes

A loot box is a virtual item you buy or earn that gives a random reward — anything from a cosmetic to powerful gear. Because you pay for a chance, several countries have debated or regulated them as a form of gambling. The problem is sharpest when the random rewards give real in-game power ("pay to win").

The risks for players

Live-service games can be switched off when they stop earning, taking what you bought with them. Before you spend, check whether rewards are cosmetic or powerful, whether odds are published, and how healthy the player base is.

HYPE OR REAL?

"Concord became the long-term live-service franchise Sony marketed it as."

▸ QUICK QUESTIONS

What does live service mean in games?
The game is updated and monetised continuously after launch — seasons, passes and in-game shops — rather than sold once as a finished product.
Are loot boxes gambling?
They share gambling's pay-for-a-random-prize mechanic, and some countries regulate them; others don't legally treat them as gambling.
What happens to purchases when a live-service game shuts down?
Usually they're gone. Concord's full refund was unusual.
