Do GitHub stars and Hacker News points prove a tool is good?

By PixPause Editorial · Updated October 1, 2026 · 4 sources

SHORT ANSWER

They measure attention, not quality. A GitHub star is a one-click bookmark from any signed-in user, and Hacker News points are upvotes on a link. Big numbers usually mean lots of developers noticed a project — but stars can be bought, a researched study found millions of suspected fake ones, and neither number tells you whether the tool works well for you.

EXPLAIN IT LIKE I'M 5

Stars are like the number of people who walked into a shop and said "nice, I'll come back later". It shows the shop is popular — not that anyone bought anything, and some of those visitors may have been paid to walk in.

What the numbers are

On GitHub, starring a repository is how a user saves it and shows appreciation; the star count is the total. On Hacker News, a "Show HN" post lets a maker share a project, and readers upvote it into points and comment. Both are public, easy to read and widely quoted in launch posts — which is exactly why they get gamed.

Fake stars are real

A 2024 study of GitHub data from 2019 to 2024 (StarScout, presented at ICSE 2026) found about six million suspected fake stars. It found fake-star activity surged in 2024, that most fake stars promote short-lived malware repositories, and that the rest mostly push AI/LLM, blockchain and tool projects. It also found fake stars only help for under two months.

Better signals

Look past the headline count: steady commits from many contributors, forks (people actually building on the code), real issues and discussion, and how fast stars grew compared with the repository's age and watchers. On Hacker News, a high comment-to-point ratio often means the launch was argued over, not simply praised.

▸ THE HYPE VS WHAT WE FOUND

Real claims involving this term, each checked in a PixProof with linked sources.

GitHub stars for tools checked on PixPause
Cline (AI coding agent)67,832 stars
Aider (AI coding CLI)48,897 stars
Continue (AI coding assistant)35,869 stars
Signal for Android29,311 stars
OpenBot (one month old)4,793 stars

Each bar is one PixProof, read from the project's GitHub page in September 2026. OpenBot's count was flagged for growing unusually fast for a month-old repository.
