What is AGI?
AGI (artificial general intelligence) means AI that can match or beat humans across most kinds of tasks, not just one. It does not exist yet, and there is no single agreed test for when it would — which is why "AGI" claims are hard to check.
Today's AI is like a calculator that's brilliant at some things and clueless at others. AGI would be like a person who can learn almost anything — and nobody has built one yet.
- Every AI product today
- AGI — not built yet, no agreed test
A concept scale, not a measurement — nobody agrees exactly where today's models sit.
No one agrees on the definition
OpenAI's charter defines AGI as "highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work." Other researchers define it by reasoning ability, by learning new skills quickly, or by passing broad sets of tests. Because the definitions differ, two companies can both say they are "close to AGI" while meaning different things.
Narrow AI vs AGI
Every AI product today is narrow: it can be superhuman at some tasks (chess, image recognition, drafting text) and surprisingly poor at others. AGI would be general — able to pick up almost any intellectual task the way a person can.
How to read an AGI claim
Ask which definition is being used, which tests were run, and whether anyone outside the company reproduced the result. Benchmarks with "AGI" in the name, like ARC-AGI, measure specific abilities; a high score is meaningful evidence, not proof that AGI has arrived.

HYPE OR REAL?
"Claude Fable 5.1's top capability rankings are backed by independent testing, not just Anthropic's own numbers."
The answer: Real. Artificial Analysis, ARC-AGI and Vals AI independently rank it at or near the top — though separate tests found behaviour gaps.

- Does AGI exist yet?
- No. There is no system widely accepted as AGI, and no agreed test that would settle it.
- What is the difference between AI and AGI?
- AI covers any machine doing "intelligent" tasks; today's AI is narrow. AGI is the hypothetical point where one system is human-level across most tasks.
