What is GPT, and what is ChatGPT?
GPT stands for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer" — OpenAI's family of large language models. ChatGPT is OpenAI's chatbot app built on top of those models; it launched on November 30, 2022 and made LLMs mainstream.
GPT is the engine, ChatGPT is the car. OpenAI builds the engine, then puts it in a friendly car you can drive by typing.
Breaking down the name
Generative: it produces new text. Pre-trained: it first learns from a huge general dataset before being tuned for specific uses. Transformer: the neural-network design (from Google's 2017 "Attention Is All You Need" paper) that it is built on. OpenAI released the first GPT model in 2018 and has shipped a numbered series since.
GPT vs ChatGPT
GPT is the model — the engine. ChatGPT is the product — the chat window, memory, file uploads, search and so on, built around a GPT model. Developers can also use GPT models directly through OpenAI's API, and many other apps do exactly that. "GPT" is not a generic word for every chatbot: Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google) and Llama (Meta) are separate model families.
Who makes it
OpenAI, an American AI company that started as a non-profit research lab in 2015. Microsoft is its largest outside investor and builds OpenAI models into its Copilot products.
